A PrayerS for those in bondage to an addictive substance

Addiction Prayer No. 1

O Lord, my Creator, hear my pleas for help and mercy. God I confess that I am addicted to _________, that it has taken over my life and caused me and those I love indescribable pain and suffering. Show me Your mercy and give me Your forgiveness, O Lord, for the sake of Your Son Jesus.

Before the thoughts of indulging in this false worldly pleasure enter my mind Lord, block them with the helmet of salvation, and should they break through, replace them with thoughts of who You are and all that You have done. Remind me of the guilt and shame I feel after I have indulged in this false pleasure. Remind me of all the reasons why I don’t want to be held in bondage by ________. I ask You to remind me that my strength must come from Your mighty power within me. I ask that Your Holy Spirit keep Your Word of Truth always before my eyes, in my heart and mind. Bring the scriptures I have read and heard to mind continually throughout the day and night. You gave me the mind of Christ when I was born again. Do not let the destroyer take that away from me. Help me to give voice to Your Word of Truth to stop the fiery arrows and not yield to temptation, do this Lord for the sake of Your Son Jesus, that I may stand safe against all the strategies and tricks of satan and this addiction.

This addiction is destroying my physical body, the very same temple where You live. God deliver me from this destroyer that I have given way to in the past. Break the stronghold that this addiction has over me. Help me to live in the present, leaving the past behind and the future in Your hands. I submit all my ways into Your loving hands. I know I can count on You. You never break Your promises and You have promised to help me in my distress. You have promised to forgive me when I confess my sins. You have promised that if I take Your yoke upon me Your burden is light. Father God, help me when I doubt, strengthen my faith, help me to persevere through this, and give me Your victory in the name of Jesus Christ Your beloved Son.

Forgive me for I have sought comfort and solace in this addiction instead of turning to You the God of true comfort, mercy and peace. You are my reconciliation, You never give me more than I can handle. I cast all my cares on You in accordance with the scriptures Jesus taught. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. The battle is Yours God for You are all mighty, all powerful and all holy.

Forgive me for hurting my family, loved ones, friends, employers, fellow employees, landlords and anyone else that my folly has affected. Give them Your love and comfort, heal their grief and pain. Give them understanding knowledge of the dreadful destruction of addiction. Give them merciful hearts to help me through my struggles and stir them up to pray for me. Forgive me for the lies I have told, the sins I have tried to cover, for wasting the money You have given, and any other sins I have committed in relation to this addictive behavior I have given place to in my life.

There is something amiss in me Lord, something in my heart, mind, soul and spirit is painfully wrong. I need Your intervention, I need Your help, I need Your healing, I need Your reconciliation. Whatever it is that is in my heart and mind that I am trying to cover-up and not deal with correctly Lord repair and restore. Help me to live rightly, following the guidance for living in this world in Your written Word.

Do not let complacency overtake me but keep me ever vigilant against this foe. For we do not struggle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, powers, the world forces of this darkness; against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places.(Eph. 6:12)

From now on I determine to walk in faith and fearful reverence of You most Holy God, having been crucified with Christ it is no longer I that live but Christ that lives within me. – Karrol Sneed 2014

Addiction Prayer No. 2

Eternal God, there is none like You, You ride through the heavens to my help, through the skies in Your majesty. For You are my dwelling place, my refuge, and underneath me are Your everlasting arms. You will drive out my enemy before me. I am blessed for I am saved by the Lord! God, You are my shield and helper, You are my sword. My enemies will cower before me and You will trample down their high place.

God I confess my sins of the flesh manifesting themselves in addiction. I have become enslaved by these false gods. They have become the masters of my life. It is written that you cannot serve two masters. I have liked my addiction and become loyal to it instead of being loyal to You. (Matt 6:24) But Christ Jesus has set me free from sin and death. (Rom 8:2) Now I choose to only serve You, my Lord, with all my mind being ruled by the Spirit who gives me life and peace. (Rom 8:6) In everything, I have won more than a victory because of Christ who loves me. (Rom 8:37)

For it is written that the unrighteous, drunkards etc. will not inherit the Kingdom of God. (1 Cor. 6:9-11) O God who is all powerful, loving and merciful I thank you for showing me that the addiction that I have been in bondage to for so long is both the lust of the flesh and a form of idolatry because I have put it before You. Help me to quit giving myself over to any lust of the flesh, form of addiction or idolatry. Instead, I want to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Then I know You will add all these things to me. (Matt. 6:33) I renounce and flee from this fleshly lust of addiction to __________ and all forms of idolatry in my life that would usurp Your rightful place. (1 Cor. 10::14)

Lord God Almighty, I commit myself to You for You are the God who judges justly. Help me to walk by the Spirit so that I will not ever fulfill the lust of my flesh. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may walk through the course of this life uprightly in a manner worthy of Your love and redemption.

O God, it is my hearts desire to bear the fruit of the Spirit in my life at all times. May my life bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and self control.

God, You alone are my rock, my strength and my help and through Your grace, I will stand fast in the freedom Christ Jesus, my Savior who redeemed me and who bought me with the precious price of His death on the cross. I seek to honor You and bring glory to You in my body. ( 1 Cor. 6:20) For Christ Jesus himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds I have been healed. (1 Peter 2:24)

Through Christ who loved me I am more than a conqueror in all things. (Rom. 8:37) Christ has set me free therefore I stand firm, not submitting again to a yoke of slavery to addiction through the lust of my flesh. (Gal. 5:1) I no longer yield my body and faculties to impurity and lawlessness. For I know well enough from my own experience that there are some acts of so-called freedom that destroy freedom. When I offered myself to sin, it was my last free act. For sin began to rule over me. But when I offer myself to the ways of God, the freedom never quits. All my life I have let sin tell me what to do. But thanks to You God, I have started listening to a new master, one whose commands set me free to live openly in his freedom! (Rom. 6:17-19 MSG) It is written if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.(John 8:36)

O God lead me by Your Holy Spirit every moment of the day. Keep my mind focused on what is true and honorable, the things that are right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and worthy of praise. (Phil. 4:8) I stand against all evil desires and temptations, fully clothed in the spiritual armor You have provided for me. (Eph. 6:10-18) I give You all the glory, honor and praise. Amen — Karrol Sneed 2014

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Romans 13:14 (AMP) 14  But clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), and make no provision for [indulging] the flesh [put a stop to thinking about the evil cravings of your physical nature] to [gratify its] desires (lusts).

But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.

Ephesians 2:10 (AMP) 10  For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].

Ephesians 5:18-20 (AMP) 18  And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit. 19  Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord, 20  At all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (AMP) 10  In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides]. 11  Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. 12  For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere. 13  Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]. 14  Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, 15  And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace. 16  Lift up over all the [covering] shield of saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]. 17  And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. 18  Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).

Philippians 4:6-7 (AMP) 6  Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. 7  And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 2:15 (AMP) 15  [God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross].

2 Thessalonians 3:3 (AMP) 3  Yet the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen [you] and set you on a firm foundation and guard you from the evil [one].

Titus 2:11-14 (AMP) 11  For the grace of God (His unmerited favor and blessing) has come forward (appeared) for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind. 12  It has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness (irreligion) and worldly (passionate) desires, to live discreet (temperate, self-controlled), upright, devout (spiritually whole) lives in this present world, 13  Awaiting and looking for the [fulfillment, the realization of our] blessed hope, even the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One), 14  Who gave Himself on our behalf that He might redeem us (purchase our freedom) from all iniquity and purify for Himself a people [to be peculiarly His own, people who are] eager and enthusiastic about [living a life that is good and filled with] beneficial deeds.

Hebrews 10:25 (AMP) 25  Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching.

James 1:12-15 (AMP) 12  Blessed (happy, to be envied) is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive [the victor’s] crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him. 13  Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted from God; for God is incapable of being tempted by [what is] evil and He Himself tempts no one. 14  But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions). 15  Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death.

James 4:7 (AMP) 7  So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you.
