Early Morning

Go to your morning prayers as soon as you are ready; lest your mind become busy with other things and be thereby unfitted for devotion.  Kneeling down reverently in your accustomed place, put yourself in God’s presence and say:

Gracious Father that hears prayer, to You shall all flesh come.
There is not a word in my mouth, that You, 0 Lord, do not already know.
Lord, teach me to pray.

Then after a short pause begin as follows the Confession

I am not worthy to enter into Your presence, 0 God, or to lift up my hands towards the mercy-seat of Your holy temple. For I have strayed from the way of Your commandments, and have done evil in Your sight.

By sinful thoughts, and wicked tempers, by idle words and wrongful deeds, I have provoked Your wrath, and deserved chastisement; especially by . . . [think of the Sins most on your conscience.]

Through my own fault, 0 Lord, through my own most grievous fault, have I transgressed; and I am without excuse before You.

I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost. O seek Your servant; for I do not forget Your commandments.

Blessed Jesus, the hope of sinners, obtain for me, I beseech You, by Your blood and merits, the full forgiveness of my offenses.

0 Holy Spirit of grace, renew in me whatever is decayed or lost through sin. Teach me to know, obey and love, my God and Father, and help me from day to day in the way that leads to life.

Lords Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

[Insert here the Proper Collects for the day of the week and for the season, etc.]
Now, pausing a little, direct your thoughts to the necessity of God’s help to carry you in safety through the trials and duties of the day. Then say: —

Prayer for Grace and Help

As I go forth to my work and to my labor until the evening. O Lord, I ask You to prosper the work of my hands. 0 Lord, prosper my handy-work.

My body and my soul are in Your hands, 0 Lord. Protect me, if it be Your gracious will, from every evil accident; or if You are pleased to send trial and suffering, enable me to profit by them.

Save me from all bad thoughts and base desires. Do not let my heart be inclined to any evil thing. Set a watch before my mouth; and turn away my eyes, lest they behold vanity. Give me such a spirit of love, that I may do all things with charity. Grant me the means of doing good, and grant me grace to make use of them. Make me to go in the path of Your commandments; for therein is my desire.

Here reflect a moment on the wants of those for whom you are going to pray. Then say: —

Remember, gracious God, for good all those for whom I am bound to pray.

Be with the rulers of this land, that they forget not You, the King of kings.

Give grace and blessing to the ministers of Your Word and Sacraments, especially to those whom You hast set over me, the Bishop of the Diocese and the clergy of this place.

[Be gracious to my dear wife {or husband), and grant that we may live together in holy love, pleasing You in body and soul unto our lives* end.]

[Bless my dear children. Keep them in Your fear and love, and make them partakers of Thine eternal kingdom.]

Be gracious [to my dear parents, brothers and sisters, my god-children, pupils, servants, master and mistress,] to all my relations, friends and neighbors ; especially . . . [Here think of any one who has asked your prayers or much needs them,]

Forgive all who have done me harm by word or deed; and do You good to all who have done good to me.

0 look You upon us, and be merciful unto us, and grant us Your peace, 0 Lord. Amen.

Before the thanksgiving which follows give some thought to the great goodness of God towards you from your birth unto this present hour. Then say:

I will thank You, 0 Lord my God, with all my heart, and will praise Your Name for evermore.

Many and great have been the mercies and favors, observed and unobserved, which You have bestowed on Your unworthy servant, and on those belonging to me. 0 cause me to see and feel Your goodness in all that You have given, and all that You have denied me, or taken from me.

I thank You, and praise You, for my creation, for Your daily care and bounties, for the kindness that I have received from parents, kindred and friends, and for all the comforts and blessings of this passing life; but more especially for the grace of my new birth in You, for Your long-suffering, mercy, and forgiveness. Your Fatherly corrections and reproofs, for the knowledge of Your truth and will, and for the blessed hope of everlasting life, vouchsafed to us through Jesus Christ, Your Son.

Bless the Lord, 0 my soul, and forget not all His benefits.

Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth for evermore.

[Offer here your petitions for any particular grace that you desire to ask of God and prayers or thanksgivings for special occasions]   This is also a fit place for any supplication, or expression of faith, love, or gratitude that you wish to address to your Heavenly Father in your own words; or for meditation, if the occasion serve.

In conclusion make a solemn offering of your devotions to God in the Name of Christ, through whom we have access by the Spirit unto the Father:—

In the Name of Jesus Christ, the propitiation for my sins, my Advocate and Mediator, have I now come before You, 0 God.
For His sake hear me, 0 gracious Lord.
For His merits’ and Your own mercies’ sake, vouchsafe to accept this offering of prayer and praise, to Your glory, and to, my comfort and salvation. Amen.
