O GOD, our Creator and Protector, the Father of our spirits, and the Friend of our souls, we are once more gathered together in Your name. We are Your children, and under Your special care we desire again to place ourselves.

Before we go to rest we would thank You for the mercies of the past day, and we would ask You to pardon the sins which we have committed. O God, forgive our self-seeking and self-pleasing. Forgive our want of faith and love, our coldness in prayer, and our slothfulness in the discharge of our several duties. We have loved this world too much, and have been overburdened with its cares. Free us from its bondage, and raise our affections to things above.

Oh that we may live nearer to You, and devote ourselves more entirely to Your service. Make Your word instructive to our minds, and precious to our souls; and give us more real enjoyment in prayer. May our hope be fixed on Christ, and may He be our present joy and our future portion.

We are tied and bound, O Lord, with the chain of our sins; in mercy loose us. Grant us pardon for the past. Blot out all our transgressions. They are great indeed. Our own hearts condemn us; and much more do You, who knows ail things, and searches our very hearts and reins. We would wash in that fountain which You have opened for sin and for uncleanness. May the blood of Jesus cleanse us, and may the Spirit of Jesus quicken us, and give new life to our souls.

Keep guard over us during the silent watches of the night. Be about our bed. Commit us to the care of ministering angels. Preserve us from all the dangers of the night. Keep us from fire and violence, from storm and tempest. And shield our souls also from the assaults of Satan. Put away from us all evil thoughts. and unholy desires. Be our hiding-place, and shelter us under Your wings, so that no evil may befall us.

And now, O Lord, we will lay ourselves down to sleep and take our rest. Prepare us for that night which shall be our last; and, whether we wake or sleep, may we be Yours forever, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day [or, day by day] our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil for Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the Lord direct our hearts this night and for ever in the love of God, and in the patient waiting for Christ. The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
