The Armed Forces
Key Thought: Valiant men and women guard our nation — and all our freedoms — from watch posts around the world.
Key Scripture: “He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings shalt you trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler ” (Ps. 91:1-4) .
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you prophesied correctly that there would always be wars and rumors of wars.1 Because this is true, we need our armed forces to defend us from those nations that plot against us.
Bless our Commander-in-Chief, the President of the United States. Give him wisdom, Father, as he makes the decisions that affect the defense of our nation. Be with him, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the chiefs of each military force, the generals, admirals and other officers of our armed forces. Bless especially the men and women of the army, navy, air force, marines, coast guard, and other services as they work hard to protect us in lonely places around the world.
Thank you for the veterans of the armed forces who have sacrificed so much to protect our land and our freedom. Many thousands have died in the service of our country and we thank you, Father, for giving them the courage and honor to lay down their lives for us. We acknowledge the truth that no man or woman has greater love than that which is demonstrated by their willingness to lay down their lives for another.2
Help the members of our armed forces to realize that by serving our country they are serving you. Help each one to see that he or she is your minister for good, that they do not bear the sword in vain because it is their divine commission to execute wrath upon those who do evil.3
Surround our service people with your love, O Lord. Anoint the military chaplains to preach your Word with clarity and conviction so that many military personnel will come to know you in a personal way.
I pray especially for_ _who serve(s) you and this nation in the armed forces. Be a very present help to him/her.4 Help him/her to realize that you are with him/her always,5 and to remember that you will never leave nor forsake him/her.6 Keep him/her from evil at all times.7 Protect him/her and give him/her a love for your Word and for Christian fellowship. Remind him/her of your promise that if he/she will abide under your shadow, that even if a thousand fall at his/her side and if ten thousand fall at his/her right hand, it will not come near him/her.8
Thank you for all the Christian people who minister to our service people around the world. Bless them in their important ministries. Fill the Christian servicemen’s centers with your Spirit so that earnest seekers will come and be won to you.
Lord, I beseech you in behalf of our nation and the armed forces who protect us, that when war clouds threaten on the horizon, you will lead our people to prayer. Then shall you go forth, Lord, and you will fight against those nations that become our enemies in the same way you often fought in behalf of your people in the Old Testament.9
Fight for us, Lord, in the same way that you fought against the Egyptians10 when Israel was oppressed by them. You are our strength and our song and you have become our salvation. You always triumph gloriously, and you throw the horse and his rider into the sea. You, O Lord, are a man of war. Your right hand has become glorious in power, and your right hand dashes our enemies in pieces. In the greatness of your excellency you overthrow those who rise up against you and your people. With the blast of your nostrils you can dry up a flood. When our enemies pursue us, you will overtake them. Who is like you, O Lord? You are glorious in holiness, fearful in praises and you always do wonders.11
Guide our armed forces, Lord, to do mighty exploits in your wonderful name.12
